Fifty Shades of Gray by E.L. James

The question I am asking myself is whether or not I want to read this. I have read more bad reviews than good, but then I'm left thinking...
'Why the hell is this book so popular?'
Is it just another twi-hard faze, when no one really gave a f*** about the book, they just wanted to be like their friends and follow the crowd? I refuse to be a sheep.
So my question is this.
 'Is the book any good?'

Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1)

I don't care that it is about BDSM, but apparently its a really sick version of it. I mean seriously, I heard that Christian Grey made Anastasia Steele sign a contract before they could go any further in their 'relationship' but she had to agree to submit to him, no questions asked. Is this for real? Is Grey for real? Plus, does the girl really go on about her 'inner goddess'? What the hell does that even mean?
I always get too involved when I read books, I either get really happy, sad or downright mad, so I'd appreciate it if anyone who doesn't consider themselves part of the herd, if you could tell me what you thought. I'd seriously appreciate it because I am insanely curious. I just don't want to spend money on this book just to waste it if I ended up setting it on fire in anger, once or if I end up finishing it. *Laughs*
Thanks.
